Overthinking Is More Common Than You Think If you’ve ever found yourself replaying conversations, imagining worst-case scenarios, or lying awake analysing every little thing you’ve said or done, you’re not alone. One of the most common things I hear from people in my therapy room is: “I just can’t switch my brain off.” Many people believe overthinking is simply part of their personality. They tell me they’ve “always been like this” or that they’re “just an anxious person.” But that’s rarely true. Overthinking isn’t who you are. It’s what your brain has learned to do. Your Brain Is Trying to Protect You One of the things I love explaining to my clients is that your brain is never trying to make life difficult. In fact, it’s trying to do exactly the opposite. Deep inside your brain is a part whose only job is to keep you safe. It constantly scans for anything that might be a threat. When we’re stressed, overwhelmed or anxious, that protective part becomes overactive. Instead of helping us solve genuine problems, it begins searching for dangers that often aren’t there. It asks questions like: The more we answer those questions, the more our brain believes they’re important. Before long, overthinking becomes a habit. Why Telling Yourself to “Stop Thinking” Doesn’t Work People often become frustrated with themselves. “Why can’t I just stop thinking?” Unfortunately, our brains don’t work that way. If I asked you not to think about a pink elephant for the next thirty seconds, what would happen? You’d probably picture one almost immediately. Trying to force thoughts away often gives them even more attention. Instead, we need to help the brain feel calmer and safer, so it no longer feels the need to keep sounding the alarm. The Good News The wonderful thing about the brain is that it can change. This is called neuroplasticity. Every day your brain forms new pathways based on where you place your attention. When we begin reducing stress, sleeping better and focusing more on what’s working, those calmer pathways become stronger. This certainly doesn’t happen overnight, but it does happen. I’ve seen people who have spent years trapped in anxiety and overthinking gradually discover that their minds become quieter, calmer and more balanced. Not because they’ve become different people. But because their brains have learned a different way of responding.
